Again, I am a little late with this post, but what the heck.The Telegraph says that 1000 spiritual leaders in Afghanistan held a serious confab, called an "ulema shura", or "meeting of clerics" to pledge allegiance to President Karzsai, more or less, and to strip Mullah Mohammed Omar of his mullahood. What will his new title be? No Mullah Omar or Mullah No More Omar or, my favorite, Omar Mullah No Más Mohammed? That is the good news. The bad news is that this pledge to support Karzai comes with a few strings attached. For instance, the assembled religious leaders demanded the outlawing of drugs, alcohol and sexual films. Lost me right there, but I guess that stills will continue to be available for viewing at one's leisure. The really bad news is that the clerics also demanded that women's rights must remain within Sharia law, which is to say that they (women) will continue to enjoy no rights at all. Sigh.
