Oaxaca, Mexico: Email of the week

A Mike McKay writes an email asking for more background on APPO, the SNTE Section 22 teachers' union, etc. Then he makes this observation, based upon my reporting and his interpretation thereof:

It looks like, from an outsider's view, your town is run by mobs who are opposed by thugs.

Well, Mike, you get it. That just about sums up the political climate here. What is happening now kind of reminds me of the scenes towards the conclusion of "Gangs of New York". The federal forces had to step in to take action while two murderous gangs beat the crap out of each other.
