Good Company

Howard Dean has been catching a lot of flack, including from inside his own party, which may not be entirely fair. Some very famous and highly respected people over the years have expressed feelings about the Republican Party not unlike those being expressed by Dean. To wit;

Alfred E. Newman

Republicans are made up largely of irrelevancies.
Dalton Camp

Eugene McCarthy (1916 - )

The problem with Republicans is they get elected.
Henry Cate VII

The word 'Republican' is derived from the word 're', meaning 'again and again', and the word 'publican', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'.
Larry Hardiman

Republicans are skilled in the use of blunt objects.
Lester B. Pearson (1897 - 1972)

Nothing can so alienate a voter from the political system as backing a winning Republican.

As a Republican you must always keep running with the pack. The moment that you falter and they sense that you are injured, the rest of the Republicans will turn on you like wolves.
R. A. Butler (1902 - 1982)

Republicans belong to the only political party for which no preparation is thought necessary.
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894)

Republicans are not nice.
Barbara Bush (1925 - )

Sometime they'll elect a Republican and nobody will come.
Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967), The People, Yes (1936)

Republicans may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, they are always an evil, never a good.
Jimmy Carter (1924 - )

Either Republicans are obsolete or men are.
R. Buckminster Fuller (1895 - 1983), New Yorker, Jan. 8, 1966

It is well that Republicans are so terrible, or we should grow too fond of them.
Robert E. Lee (1807 - 1870)

One day President Roosevelt told me that he was asking publicly for suggestions about what the Republicans should be called. I said at once 'The Unnecessary Ones'.
Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965), Second World War (1948)

The art of fighting Republicans is simple enough. Find out where the Republicans are. Get at them as soon as you can. Strike them as hard as you can, and keep moving.
Ulysses S. Grant (1822 - 1885)

Republicans teach us not to love our enemies, but to hate our allies.
W. L. George

Opinions founded by Republicans are always sustained with the greatest of violence.
Francis Jeffrey (1773 - 1850)

Republicans are the last refuge of the incompetent.
Isaac Asimov (1920 - 1992), Salvor Hardin in "Foundation"

There are no more pleasant things to do than beat up Republicans.
Muhammad Ali (1942 - )

I've grown certain that the root of all fear is that we've been forced to deny we are Republicans.

Georges Clemenceau (1841 - 1929)

An honest Republican is one who, when he is bought, will stay bought.
Simon Cameron (1799 - 1889)

The Republicans, in their majestic equality, forbid the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.
Anatole France (1844 - 1924), The Red Lily, 1894, chapter 7
