Eisele responds to Helen Thomas

The editor of The Hill, Albert Eisele, responds to the firestorm he kicked up when he reported that Helen Thomas told him that she would kill herself if Dick Cheney ran for president in 2008. Thomas complained bitterly that Eisele should not have quoted her, although Eisele insists she never told him that her comment s were off the record. Eisele whines just a bit about Matt Drudge picking up the article and spreading it all over the internet and he also complains a bit about some of the Neanderthalian emails he received, but then he says something of note about the term "off the record".
It’s bad enough that public officials hide behind it to discredit their critics, as the CIA leak imbroglio demonstrates, but even worse when reporters do it.
