The
Southern Decadence celebration and parade in New Orleans, an annual celebration of the gay community, was canceled because of Hurricane Katrina. The organizers of the parade are trying to move it to Lafayette. They asked for relief from normal parade permit requirements to "to allow the hurricane evacuees a sense of normalcy." Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel responded:
I don’t consider anything that’s got the word decadence in it to be normalcy.
If they want to have some semblance of normalcy, I would expect them to respect the normalcy of the community of Lafayette.
Oh my! What will excitable Andrew Sullivan have to say about this?
